Adventure & Expo

Club of the Year Award 2015

We are lucky in Plymouth to have Dartmoor on our doorstep for some pretty wild adventures. Further afield we run trips to the Brecons, Snowdonia and the Peak District, we have everything from gentle coast path strolls to full blown mountain expeditions.

We offer opportunities for both indoor and outdoor climbing, from beginner levels to experienced. The Life Centre in Plymouth offers over 150 routes on 16m, 10m and 8m walls, for top rope and lead climbs, along with a large dedicated bouldering area. For outdoor climbing the club runs trips to many locations in the South West and further afield, including the spectacular Cheddar Gorge and of course local Dartmoor. Even if you have never tried climbing and would love to give it a go, or are experienced and would like to be challenged, there is something for everyone in the club.

Slacklining is the newest sport to come to Adventure & Expo. It’s a cross between a tightrope and a trampoline, and totally addictive. Give it a go, you won’t regret it. The perfect way to unwind after a climbing/caving session or go water-lining walking across a slackline over a body of water – be prepared to get wet though! Brilliant for good balance, coordination and training your core.

There’s an eager, contingent of cavers in Adventure & Expo. They travel the country, and the world, finding the best caves. If you’re looking for a bit of adventure in your life, and you don’t mind a bit of mud, caving is for you. Conquer your fears and explore where few people venture. We regularly run trips to Devon caves, including Bakers Pit, Pridhamsleigh Cavern and Radford. Further afield we have strong ties to the Mendip Caving Group: Shepton Mallet Caving Club, Plymouth Caving Group and Devon Cave Rescue Organisation.

I will also make sure you are all insured when on trips. Feel free to ask me any questions and if you can’t find me then I’m probably on the sofa in the Life Centre.

Jonathan Coulson-Lowes

Climbing Sec

I’m Jonny and I’m this year’s climbing sec. My first year with Adventure & Expo was everything I’d hoped it would be and much more. I’m extremely passionate about the outdoors, especially climbing and therefore I’m responsible for all things climbing related within the club. So whether you’re curious about taking your first steps into climbing or are looking to advance your game to real rock, I’m happy to answer all your questions and help guide you towards your goals.

Zara Lovelock

Caving Sec

Hello everyone! I’m Zara, I’ll be your Caving Secretary this year with Ada! I joined the club last September and have really enjoyed the chance to learn loads of new skills and go on great adventures with a lovely bunch of people! Before coming to uni, I’d only caved a couple of times, but through the club I’ve been able to explore loads of amazing caves from Devon to the Peak District and learn skills including SRT, cave rescue and cave leadership. I’m really looking forward to sharing my passion and passing these skills on, whether you’re new to the sport or already have some experience and taking you on some of the great caving trips we’ve got planned for this year! I also really love getting out into the mountains and I’m a keen walker and climber. If you have any questions about caving or the club, feel free to get in touch!

Ada Myers

Caving Sec / Slacklining Sec

Hello, I'm Ada and I'm the slacklining sec as well as being joint caving sec with Zara. I'm in my 2nd year of university and have loved the opportunities Adventure and Expo have offered such as learning cave rescue, navigation and rope skills. I'm responsible for passing on these skills as well as running adventure packed caving trips all around the country. Whether you have experience or not, I assure you we will have great fun on the activity and of course socialising with a pint afterwards!!

James Robertshaw

Trip Sec

Hey all, I'm James and I'm this year's Trip sec! I've been with the club a long time and have filled this role before - I absolutely loved every moment so I've come back again. My role involves the organisation of all the journeys and trips that we run, which means transport, gear, food and logistics for everyone involved! You'll normally find me running around frantically on one of the incredible trips we run, if not I'll be climbing the closest piece of rock, or hiking the nearest mountain. If you see me at the climbing wall or around campus, feel free to say hi, and keep an eye out on Facebook for the all-important trip info posts! Looking forward to another rad year with everyone.

Joseph McComb

Social Sec

Hi guys, I’m Joseph, the social sec of Adventure and Expo this year. Im in my second year of university and trying to make a memorable one. As the social sec I’m in charge of getting the club sponsors and of course organise the alcoholic (and non alcoholic) activities and social events for the year. From nights out on the town dressed in cardboard boxes to ‘fancy’, wine and cheese nights in, there should be something for everyone. This year, I’m also trying to get other societies to do joint events with us to try and get the club out and about as much as possible. Any suggestions for new sponsors, socials or joint events that you have are much appreciated! I look forward to making this year a great one!

Helen Astle

Kit Sec

Hey guys! I'm Helen, your kit sec for this year. This means I'm in charge of keeping tabs on where all our gear is, making sure it's safe for use, and keeping the stores nicely organised. I'm also in charge of commissioning the design for, ordering and distribution of the club kit.

James Coomber

Hey guys, I’m James your hiking sec for this year. I’m a 3rd and a half year Engineering student with a keen interest in long distance hiking, trail running as well as climbing.
